Job Summary
This is a responsible, supervisory, as well as technical position in directing and participating in maintenance activities. This position will assist the superintendent in field supervision, recordkeeping, repair and maintenance of all golf course equipment. Employee will report directly to golf course superintendent.
Major Essential Duties
- Assumes the duties of the superintendent in his absence and/or supervises work force and tasks on weekends and holidays as directed.
- Maintain the course in proper playing condition
- Assists in planning and supervising the maintenance of greens, tees, and fairways.
- Instructs and supervises employees on proper golf course maintenance procedures, equipment operations and safety.
- Supervises pesticide applications and/or operates and calibrates pesticide application equipment.
- Supervises and participates in the operation and maintenance of pumps, and in the maintenance of irrigation and drainage systems.
- Analyzes and resolves work problems and/or assists workers in solving work related problems.
- Working knowledge of the maintenance of golf course tees, fairways and greens; seeding and maintenance practices for golf course turf planting, cultivating, pruning, and caring for plants, shrubs, and trees; characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers and soil conditioners; herbicides and pest control methods and materials; drainage control methods; and irrigation systems, including pumps, and automatic controls.
Minor Essential Duties
- Ability to schedule and supervise maintenance work to achieve the most efficient utilization of workers and equipment; prepare clear and concise reports; and maintain effective employee and public relations.
- Be willing to improve knowledge and skills through extra training and education.
- Willing to obtain necessary state pesticide application license (must have within 1 year of hire date).

Relationships
- Performs duties within the Golf Course Grounds, under the direct supervision of the Head Grounds Superintendent.
Requirements:
Qualifications
Education and/or Experience
- Graduate of a college or university with an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree, majoring in turf management or related field with a minimum of 2 years of experience in a golf course or related field.
- Graduate of a high school or equivalent supplemented by five years of experience in turf management and experience in the renovation or construction of a turf related facility
- Proven leadership, time management and problem-solving skills
- Strong communication skills
Language Skills
- Ability to read, analyze and interpret policies, procedures, professional publications, governmental regulations, financial reports, and legal documents
- Ability to respond to sensitive inquiries and complaints from regulatory agencies, business community members, and suppliers of goods and services
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and policy and procedure documents
- Ability to make effective presentations on complex topics to employees, business committee members, elected officials or other members of government organizations
- Ability to display strong oral, written, and listening skills
Mathematical Skills
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
- Ability to compute ratio and percent, and to draw and interpret graphs
- Ability to apply concepts of algebra and statistics as needed
Reasoning Skills
- Solve practical problems while dealing with several abstract and concrete variables
- Interpret an extensive variety of complex technical and instructional information
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
- Possession of, or promptly obtain, a proper Commonwealth of Kentucky motor vehicle operator's license for type of equipment operated.
Other Knowledge and/or Skills
- Ability to assist management in planning, scheduling, supervising, and evaluating the work of subordinates and to participate in these assignments.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with fellow employees, county officials, and the general public.
- Ability to assist in the preparation of the department budget and administer the unit budget; ability to make financial reports as required.
- Ability to plan, direct, and manage the maintenance and improvement of the facilities and grounds of the golf course including the construction of cart paths and the upkeep of buildings, fence, greens and tees, and grass and flowers.
- Skill in operating various types of automotive machinery and equipment including carts, trucks, tractors, and mowers.
- Considerable knowledge of the theories, principles, and practices of golf course maintenance.
- Ability to develop long-term plans for improving operations and attaining more effective and efficient maintenance and improvement methods.
- Ability to deal firmly, tactfully, and responsively during the investigation of complaints of citizens.
- Ability to prepare records and reports of golf maintenance activities.
- Ability to maintain and review records and reports by subordinates of all activities and transactions related to the maintenance and improvement of the facilities and grounds of the golf course.
- Ability to assist in the recruitment of employees; ability to perform other personnel functions including training and discipline of employees.
- Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and corresponding safety precautions necessary for the safe performance of assigned duties.

Hours:
- 40 hours per week
- No Overtime in the off-season
