Job Title: Bakery Manager
Employee Type: Full-Time (40 hours per week)

Compensation: $60,000 annual salary

Since 2013, Sift Gluten Free has been the Twin Cities' go-to for gluten-free baked goods. We believe that everyone should experience the connection and joy found through food, regardless of dietary restrictions. We operate a bustling retail bakery and coffee shop, have a large wholesale program, and fulfill special orders each day. We take pride in our products and our customer experience, and enjoy connecting with our community through all things gluten free.
The Bakery Manager position is an integral part of our back-of-house team. Responsibilities include:
Manage bakery staffing.
- Interview, hire and train new bakers.
- Create monthly schedule for bakery staff, keeping an eye on appropriate time off for full-time staff (at least 2 days in a row) and assessing needs for holidays, employee notices and seasonality of the business.
- Actively manage, correct and discipline staff as needed with an encouraging and approachable tone.
- Conduct annual reviews for bakery staff.
- Actively handle call-outs by covering shifts last-minute and stepping in during staffing shortages (e.g., when other bakers are out / on PTO).
Manage bakery operations.
- Set and maintain exceptional standards for cleanliness and organization in the bakery.
- Understand how to create the daily baking lineup and complete it as needed.
- Create, maintain and improve systems that support the daily bakery operations, including but not limited to the various baking lineups; daily, weekly and monthly cleaning tasks; and seasonal needs.
- Consider ways to operate more efficiently: how recipes are completed, when cleaning tasks are completed, etc.
- Consider new items or how to improve our current offerings. What do our customers (both retail and wholesale) want? Complete recipe testing as time allows.
- Constantly have an eye on how we can improve our offerings and the customer experience, and how we can reduce waste (both ingredients and consumables like paper).
Oversee seasonal and holiday planning.
- Create a calendar of daily add-on tasks for holiday prep (Easter, Mother’s Day, Thanksgiving + Christmas).
- Prepare for bake-at-home pizza pickups and train people as needed.
- Pay attention to daily in-store sales and adjust quantities to be baked as needed. Understand how weather, local events, holidays, etc. can have an impact and prepare accordingly.
Manage bakery maintenance.
- Manage inventory and order chemicals for dishwasher and 3-comp sinks.
- Contact outside vendors for maintenance as needed (e.g., ovens, dishwasher, etc.).
- Communicate any needs or concerns with owner asap (electrical, plumbing, HVAC, appliance maintenance, general building, etc.).
Complete ingredients inventory + ordering.
- Manage pars on all ingredients and place orders as needed.
- Keep all stored ingredients and items clean and organized.
- Ensure all ingredients are rotated first in, first out.
- Pick up items around town as needed (e.g., Restaurant Depot, Coop Partners, Business Costco, etc.).
- Research new potential options for ingredients, finding a balance between quality and cost.
- Update prices in cost documents as needed.
Communication.
- Meet with owner regularly to discuss how things are going. Share ideas and ask for help or guidance as needed.
- Determine the best way to streamline communication to bakery staff and keep everyone up to date.
- Build a solid relationship with the front-of-house manager to create a unified environment for all employees where communication can flow freely between front- and back-of-house.
- Lead two bakery staff meetings per year, one in spring and another in the fall.
Set a positive example of customer service.
- Maintain high standards for the customer experience.
- Have an understanding of food allergies and cross-contamination.
- Handle customer feedback with kindness and grace, and escalate to owner as necessary.
- Understand all the appropriate ordering channels (same-day, special orders, holiday and wholesale) and where to direct customers.
- Cross-sell so that customers are aware of all their purchasing options.
Our Bakery Manager must:
- Have a minimum of 5+ years of baking experience, and ideally customer service experience as well
- Have 2-3 years of supervisory or management experience
- Have a positive, professional and problem-solving attitude
- Be proactive, quick-thinking, honest and trustworthy
- Possess strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with coworkers and leadership
- Feel comfortable using Google email, Drive, Docs and Sheets
- Have strong time management skills
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand, walk and work for the duration of a shift in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform other physical tasks like bending and climbing stairs.
- Ability to work in a kitchen environment with noise, heat and general busyness.
