Job Description
International Student & Scholar Advisor Posting Summary Support international students during their enrollment at UVM from admission, through their studies, and during post-graduate work authorizations. Advise students on immigration requirements and implications with other aspects of their lives. Serve as a general point of contact for students and support them through direct advising, campus liaison work, and a range of programming. Maintain accurate immigration records for international students and scholars, including recording actions in SEVIS, maintaining internal databases, and processing student requests for actions on their immigration records. Serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) for UVM's F-1 students and serve as an Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for UVM's J-1 exchange visitors. Provide occasional support to international scholar (J-1) population. Serve as member of the International Student Services Team and report to Assistant Director for International Student Services.
Minimum Qualifications (or equivalent combination of education and experience) Bachelor's degree and one year of professional work experience in either: a US higher education administration setting, a position involving interpretation of US immigration regulations, OR a position involving substantial advising of individuals living away from their home country. Experience living or working abroad and/or substantive experience working with international populations in the United States. Ability to communicate effectively in individual advising and group presentations, including to non-native English speakers. Ability to communicate succinctly and clearly to distill complex issues in writing and in speaking. Ability to learn new computer applications. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident per federal regulations to use SEVIS database.
Desirable Qualifications Experience advising international students on F-1 or J-1 federal immigration matters. Direct experience advising students at the post-secondary level. Foreign language abilities are highly desirable, as is experience working with individuals for whom English is not a native language. Experience in organizing programs and events.
Anticipated Pay Range $53,000-$60,000
Other Information Special Conditions A probationary period may be required for current UVM employees, Bargaining unit position, External candidates must complete a 4-month probationary period, Background Check required for this position, Occasional evening and/or weekends required (if non-exempt position, may result in overtime), This position is eligible for a hybrid schedule with an option to split time between campus and elsewhere, in accordance with the university telecommuting policy
